Eden Valley, Kimball, and Watkins public library resources

Interior of a welcoming small-town public library in Minnesota

Libraries are the intellectual heart of any community, and the Kimball area is fortunate to be served by public libraries in Eden Valley, Kimball, and Watkins that offer far more than books. These community anchors provide programming for children and adults, internet access, local history resources, and gathering spaces for lifelong learners of all ages.

Eden Valley Area Library

The Eden Valley Area Library has long been a community hub in the Meeker County area. The library hosts a variety of programs throughout the year, including popular Story Hour sessions for young children. Past Story Hour guests have included well-known authors — mystery writer Stanley Trollip (of the Michael Stanley duo) has visited to share stories of his experiences in Africa and talk with children about the natural world.

The library's reading programs engage children of all ages, including initiatives that allow young readers to read down library fines — an innovative program that encourages literacy while removing barriers to library access for families.

Reading Programs & Youth Services

Summer reading programs at the area libraries bring in young readers eager to earn prizes and explore new books during the long Minnesota summer break. These programs, supported by library staff and community volunteers, help prevent summer learning loss and instill a lifelong love of reading.

The libraries stock an extensive selection of children's books, young adult fiction, and educational resources. Staff members provide personalized reading recommendations and help connect young readers with books that match their interests — whether that's Minnesota nature, farm life, history, or pure adventure stories.

Adult Programs & Resources

Adults in the Kimball area benefit from library resources including:

  • Large print collections for seniors
  • Local history and genealogy resources for researching area family history
  • Downloadable e-books and audiobooks through statewide library systems
  • Computer access and digital literacy assistance
  • Book discussion groups and author events

Inter-Library Loan & Statewide Resources

Through the Pioneerland Library System, Kimball area library patrons have access to the collections of libraries throughout west central Minnesota. Books, DVDs, audiobooks, and other materials can be requested from member libraries and delivered to the local branch, dramatically expanding what's available to rural residents.

Minnesota also offers MNLINK, a statewide interlibrary loan network that can deliver materials from academic and public libraries across Minnesota. This means that even residents of small rural communities have access to world-class library resources.

Visiting the Libraries

The area libraries welcome visitors of all ages. Community members are encouraged to get library cards, attend programs, and take advantage of these free public resources. Libraries serve as neutral community gathering spaces where everyone is welcome regardless of age, background, or reading level.
