Congratulations Little Miss Kimball

We've run lots of photos of the Little Miss Kimball candidates, the new Little Miss Kimball, and her court, but we just realized that we really haven't clearly identified the top three girls here in the Tri-County News. Pictured center is the 2010-11 Little Miss Kimball, Hannah Ehlinger. Her princesses are Lily Voight (pictured at left) and Cailyn Kuechle (at right). Congratulations, girls! Staff photo by

2010 4-H Food Review and Demonstration Day

Competition was fierce, as Meeker County 4-H'ers gathered to participate in the annual 4-H Food Review and Demonstration Day. The event was held on Saturday morning, March 6, at the Family Services Center in Litchfield. In all, we had 12 food review exhibits and 19 demonstrators. Everyone did an amazing job! Congratulations on your achievements!

The purpose of Food Review is to give members a chance to explore the Foods project. 4-H'ers set up a display showing a favorite food and questions are asked about food preparation and nutrition in an interview setting.

Terwey competes in pageant

Ashley Terwey competed in the Miss Teen Stearns County 2010 pageant the weekend of March 5-7, and found it to be a lot of fun for those involved. Meeting other people and learning a lot is something that Ashley will treasure for the rest of her life. Although she was not crowned for first place, she was awarded, selected from among 48 women, the "Super Model with Style" award.

This means that Ashley will have a photo shoot in April with a national photographer to the pageants in Minneapolis, with full hair, makeup, and clothing provided. This will be a full page layout in the Super Model magazine. This is a wonderful opportunity for Ashley as she is hoping some doors may open to modeling. Ashley's family, friends and sponsors congratulate her on a job well done.

Ashley is the step-daughter of Deb Reinert, owner of the Triple R Grill & Bar, where Ashley is employed.

Girl Scouts received award

Girl Scout troop 174 attended a teen-leader retreat and award recognition at the Brainerd Lakes Lodge last weekend. This was in recognition of the Bronze award through Girls Scouts, which they received in the spring. This resulted after they completed a project for the Humane Society of making cat and dog blankets, and collecting pet supplies to donate. The Bronze award is the highest honor they can achieve at this age group, and now they have great ideas for their Silver award. Much thanks goes to Images by Marguerite, Chickadee Tree and AmericInn of Annandale for their time spent with the girls on the related patches they earned to receive this award. Thanks to the many community members who support scouting.

Timberwolves 'Hero in the Making'
Kate Stewart-James was unlucky to learn she had leukemia when she was 12 years old. She was lucky to have the support of not just her friends and family, but her entire basketball team.

Kate, who is now 14 and from Kimball, has undergone extensive chemotherapy treatments and endured several spinal taps since being diagnosed with leukemia, but she's battled through her illness to be the FastBreak Foundation's Hero in the Making for Jan. 30, when the Minnesota Timberwolves faced the Los Angeles Lakers at Target Center. The eighth-grade girls' basketball team she plays on, the Kimball Cubs, the same team that's been together since fifth grade, joined Kate in a suite at the Wolves-Lakers game. They also watched the two teams courtside, as they went through pre-game workouts.

Kimball awarded $15,000 to invest in area children
Babies babble and may be able to form sounds like "da-da" or "ma-ma," but young children don't have the ability to speak for themselves or advocate for their needs. Because of this, 19 Kimball area residents have joined together to put an emphasis on early childhood care and education.
