'Post Polio Syndrome'

By Daniel J. Vance

A National Institutes of Health website defines post-polio syndrome (PPS) as a condition affecting "polio survivors years after recovery from an initial acute attack of the poliomyelitis virus." People with PPS can have new weakening in affected and non-affected muscles, fatigue, joint degeneration pain, and muscle atrophy. The United States has more than 400,000 polio survivors and perhaps 50 percent have PPS.

Regina Butts developed polio in 1948, not long before the first polio vaccine became available. "I got polio at 18 months," said 62-year-old Butts in a telephone interview. "My mother's story is that she handed me the baby bottle in the crib and I wouldn't reach for it with my hand

Congratulations Little Miss Kimball

We've run lots of photos of the Little Miss Kimball candidates, the new Little Miss Kimball, and her court, but we just realized that we really haven't clearly identified the top three girls here in the Tri-County News. Pictured center is the 2010-11 Little Miss Kimball, Hannah Ehlinger. Her princesses are Lily Voight (pictured at left) and Cailyn Kuechle (at right). Congratulations, girls! Staff photo by

Garage fire in Darwin

Friday Aug. 27, at 4:18 p.m. the Meeker County Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call in reference to a garage on fire at the address of 123 2nd Street North, Darwin. Upon arriving on scene, the Sheriff's Office spoke to Mary Koenen, age 36, who is the renter at this property, and verified that all members were out of the residence and safe. While Dassel Fire and Rescue were extinguishing the fire, the Sheriff's Office along with the assistant Fire Chief from Dassel Fire and Rescue, spoke to a 14-year-old step-son who lives there, in reference to the fire. At this time, the 14-year-old admitted to playing with matches shortly before the fired happened.

Truckload of turkeys rolls over

Friday, Aug. 20, shortly after midnight, the Stearns County Sheriff's Office responded to a semi-tractor and trailer rollover on County Road 65 just east of Melrose. The Melrose Police Department also responded. The semi was found in the south ditch of County Road 65 in Relrose Township.

The driver, Thomas Harlow, had been traveling westbound on the road with a load of turkeys while thunderstorms were passing through the area. Harlow ran off the road and rolled into the south ditch. It is believed that the strong wind and rains were the cause of this acident. Harlow was not injured in the rollover.

Forest City Stockade Rendezvous was Aug. 21-22

Forest City Stockade celebrated their 27th annual Rendezvous this past weekend, Aug. 21-22. Above is the Olson Barn, one of the many buildings at the restored 1860s fort. Costumed volunteers portray pioneer life as guests walk throughout the living exhibits.

In this photo, Martha Megarry and Dr. Rick Searl are setting lead type to be used on the antique presses in The News office, one of the newest buildings. The Rendezvous is the big celebration each year, on the third weekend in August. The Stockade also hosts a Pioneer Christmas celebration in early December each year.

Storm damage impact on Stearns County

Stearns County was hit by two storms this week. In response, Stearns County Emergency Management activated its Emergency Operations Center Saturday morning to coordinate cleanup operations in Stearns and Benton Counties. (Stearns is assisting Benton County because of the shared Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program which is managed by the St. Cloud Area Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.) The Emergency Operations Center has been staffed by CERT volunteers who answer the hotline, the American Red Cross, and Stearns County Highway, Information Services, Building Facilities and Emergency Management.

Monster Mike does it again
By Jean Doran Matua, Editor

Mike Schultz took home another gold medal from the X Games, this time in adaptive motocross from the summer games in Los Angeles.

This past winter, Mike took gold in adaptive snocross in the X Games.

Mike designed and built his own prosthetic knee and foot system, the one he now uses to race.

"After I got the first prototype done, I realized it would work for much more than just riding. It works really well for snowboarding, skiing, wakeboarding, and even horseback riding."

National Farmers Market Week

Brian Erickson from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture came out to the Kimball Area Farmers Market last Friday in honor of National Farmers Market Week.

He handed out window clings and T-shirts that say, "I buy local!"

It's peak harvest season for a number of Minnesota-grown vegetables, and there was an abundance of both quality and variety at the market Friday.

The Kimball Area Farmers Market is open from 3-6 p.m. every Friday throughout the growing season, in the parking lot behind Triple R Grill and Bar in Kimball.

This Friday, they'll be giving away boiled corn (while supplies last).

New London to New Brighton 24th Antique Car Run

The 24th Annual New London to New Brighton Antique Car Run is Saturday, Aug. 14. This is the day that the Grand Tour will leave New London at 7 a.m. and start its trek to the New Brighton finish line at Long Lake Regional Park between 3 and 7 pm.

The tour offers a glimpse of a time when our country and cars were young. Cars from 1908 and earlier and 1-and 2-cylinder vehicles through 1915 will participate. These cars are referred to as the "brass era" cars. They were built in small quantities in many cases prior to the more "modern" assembly-line cars.

Consider donating school supplies

School is on the horizon, which means it is time to start thinking about back to school. One glimmer of excitement comes from getting brand new school supplies to use for a new school year. Studies say that students who are well equipped with school supplies for the first day of school are more likely to succeed throughout the school year.

Unfortunately, for many children this is a luxury their families cannot afford, including those in our own community. This year, as you and your family are out buying supplies for the coming school year, please pick up a few extras supplies for those in need in our community.
