This year’s 4-H Residential Camp theme was “Science Seekers.” There were 131 youth from 12 counties attending the annual 4-H Camp. Campers had the opportunity to pick one of five track choices. They included: learning about aerospace and rockets, learning about research and planting strawberries, learning about sewing, learning about engineering and catapults, and learning about photography. They also played games, learned songs, and developed new friendships. The 4-H camp was three days and two nights for youth who had completed third-sixth grades and was held at the University of Minnesota – Morris campus. Twenty-three youth in seventh-12th grades were trained to be 4-H camp counselors and provided leadership to the camp.

Since 1966, one member of the Minnesota 4-H horse project has been awarded the Dan Patch Award. This award is based on the individual’ s overall achievement, leadership, and service. The winner receives a plaque bearing a picture of the famous pacer, Dan Patch, who set the world pacing record for the mile of 1:55 Sept. 8, 1906, at the Minnesota State Fair. To apply for this award, youth complete a résumé, portfolio, and all chosen finalists give a presentation. Recipients and finalists will be recognized at the Minnesota State 4-H Horse, which will be held Sept. 12-15, 2014. The Dan Patch award focuses on youth in 10th grade through one year past 12th grade at the start of the contest year. Sixth through ninth-graders compete for Youth Leadership Trips.
